Take a visual journey through Voltaire's Candide

On the map above, students from Brooklyn's Edward R. Murrow High School created their own modern-day journeys through the lands that Candide and his companions traveled, using Google Earth and NYPL's Digital Gallery of historical images and maps. Each of the lines represents one student's imaginary journey, with images and commentary added at points of interest plotted along the way, such as the fictional South American paradise of Eldorado, the horrifying wreckage of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake, and the colorful ports and cities of 18th-century Europe. We invite you to travel their paths, then click here to find out how you can add your own "Candide journey" to the map!
